So some people have been doing the snowflake challenge, and never one to shy away from jumping onto a bandwagon two weeks late, I decided that I TOO WOULD DO THE SNOWFLAKE CHALLENGE. As I am catching up, I'm going to try to do it all in one monster entry. Hold onto your seats, the ride may be hella bumpy.
Day 1
All right, damn, seeing as the next challenge is to create a fanwork and it's 11pm already, I'm gonna finish up for now, and continue... tomorrow? Tomorrow. Ahh I don't have work on Friday, frabjous day.
Ugh I tried to give each challenge its own cut, but the HTML was just messing up all over the shop. Sorry.
Day 1
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created.
All right then. I thought I'd struggle a bit with this one, because I am not what you might call prolific, but here goes.
I'd first like to rec Once A Mighty Sailor, which I wrote for pokeprompts back in the day. It's about 2.5k of Mr Briney fic, i.e. just the life story of a ridiculously minor character from Pokémon RSE. It's easily one of my favourite things I've written, and one of the most well-received too. It'sabout adventure and the sea and memories and a life well lived, I think.

Then it's we ain't got much but we've got history, or alternately We 8n't got much 8ut Weve Got History but typing it like that is silly and tiring. This was my ladystuck entry - the Homestuck ladycentric fic/art exchange - written for PlayerProphet. It's about Kanaya and Vriska and it's not a happy story because theirs is not a happy story. Kids and fun. Specifically it follows Kanaya's feelings for Vriska throughout the canon plot, through a series of snippets. Warning for spoilers, death and blood: more kids and fun! I think it's written differently from how I normally write, so I don't know quite how to feel about it, but there are definitely lines I like a lot in it.And last and arguably least - the scope of this challenge allows me to rec things that aren't just fic and art and whatnot, so have one of my more notable contributions to fandom as of late, my Shoebox Reread Project Meta! (There is a bit of rubbish non-meta in that tag also, but I apologise for nothing.) I didn't consider what I was doing as anything more than self indulgent, to be honest, but a lot of people said nice things to me about it, and seemed to hold my ramblings in some regard, so maybe it's worth a gander.
Day 2
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create.
Tea and Sympathy is my favourite Rent fic ever. It's short, but it's lovely. It's post-Rent fic about Joanne and Mark's friendship, and is not only a wonderful representation of a character that rarely gets a look-in in fanworks (it's from Joanne's POV) but the characterisation of Mark is spot-on. It's gentle and sweet and just the best ever.
If you are in Animorphs fandom at all, you will have seen this fanart, but it's my FAVOURITE FANART, I cannot ever get over its beauty. Look at shoomlah's picture of the six Animorphs. Guhh it's so beautiful. Shoomlah's Rachel is 100% my headcanon Rachel. The expressions and the dynamics and the colours and the shading in this picture are incredible. It's not overly complicated but it's gorgeous and amazing and I really really like it, okay.
And for something in no way obscure (the challenge suggests "See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated" but I am going to ignore that right now) Beautiful, Once is a Remus/Sirius fic that tears my heart out in 200 or so words. It's a piece of writing that makes me very jealous, because it's far removed from the way I write, but it's a style that I admire very much. I kind of want to print it out and keep it under my pillow or on my noticeboard or something.
Day 3
Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"
I've done that a lot recently thanks to ladystuck and friending memes and such, so done.
Day 4
Introduce yourself to someone you admire and friend/follow them on whatever platform you use - journal or Twitter or Tumblr or whatever.
I've done that, too! Wahey, friends!
Day 5
In your own space, share something non-fannish you are passionate about with your fannish friends.
The first thing that leaps to mind is singing. I love singing: it's important to my sense of well being. If I can't sing for a while, I tend to get pretty down. I'm intensely audiocentric; I have excellent memory for melodies and am particularly susceptible to earworms. I also can't work in silence, I need background noise to concentrate. Singing, however, is my passion because of these things and also not at all because of these things. I enjoy choral music because I enjoy being part of the wall of sound, part of something greater than the sum of its parts. Singing is the closest thing to a spiritual experience I've ever had, and it's often extremely emotional for me.
I've said "singing"; I should specify that I mean singing classical music. I would love to learn opera, and I think I could have the voice for it but obviously I would require a lot of training, probably more training than I can afford both timewise and moneywise. I love musical theatre as well but I'm not really cut out for it - I'm a terrible dancer, apart from anything else. My favourite things I've sung are probably Carmina Burana (I will always have a soft spot for Carmina Burana, ngl), all of the Pergolesi just all of it but especially the Stabat Mater (because I know that the best ha haha) and also anything I've ever done by Benjamin Britten. In choir I sing alto which is frequently BORING but we get the odd good line here and there. Oh and Gilbert & Sullivan will always have a very special place in my bosom.
Also sometimes I cry over Carols from Kings, and by "sometimes" I mean "on Christmas Day in my pyjamas".
Day 6
In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) and that you ended up loving.
Ack, this one is hard! Okay, to start off with I will rec The Death of Narcissa Black: A Potion because it is amaaazing, amazing, and if you haven't read it now you should go read it RIGHT NOW GO NOW GO READ IT. Warning which I should've given before you went to read it: it's very very very dark and full of violence and probably death and blood and everything, through sequential art nonetheless, but it's really great and if you can, you should read it. I didn't expect to be interested because I don't really think much about Narcissa but this is just stunning and all of the superlatives ever.
And then it's London Rain, aka Sarah's first Dersecest and... I don't really have anything against incest, but I was a bit like "of all the pairings in Homestuck, and there are bloody loads, why why why do you have to ship the siblings you sick individuals!?" But then I read this, and I saw the light. Dave/Rose is 100% where it is at. This fic is also wonderful because it's so London. It's weighted by its sense of place. The detail of the setting is absolutely exquisite. I'm only the tiniest bit of a Londoner, but I can see that the author knows the city very well, and that is an absolute pleasure to read.
And then, idk, have this Inbetweeners fic which is wondrous and so in character. How we like to live our lives is not something I could have or would have written but it is really good!!
Day 7
In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.
Hmmmm... recently I have been thinking that I would really like some Lily-centric fic (Lily Evans/Potter, you understand, from the Harry Potters). I considered trying to write Remus/Sirius from Lily's POV but just the idea of that made my head hurt so I refrained from doing so. But more Lily fic would be welcomed, anyway!
Also Homestuck ladyslash is always always always what I want, mainly Vriska/everyone but everyone/everyone is also permissible.
I think there may have been a time once when I had fandoms other than Harry Potter and Homestuck.
I'd also like... some nice Rukia icons! I don't have any on my dreamwidth account and Rukia is my precious baby/light of my life/etc so this clearly Will Not Do.
Oh yeah, and I will kiss the face of anyone who ever writes me Everworld fic damn I love that series so mu-u-u-uch.
Day 8
In your own space, talk about a talent (or talents) you have. Everyone's got something they're good at.
I'm good at words! I'm a decent writer, I just massively lack motivation, which is something I need to work on. But I have an excellent vocabulary and grasp of grammar, and an okay sense of how to fling words together. I'm also good at languages, though French is the only language I'm actively learning at the moment. I seem to have an almost intrinsic sense for grammar - it clicks very quickly for me. My French is definitely better than that of some of my peers, and sadly I do measure myself against other people to make judgements on my own talents. But yep, language and literature are my "talents".
